Thoughts captured on November 5, 2023
Good people,
This moment was definitely cool and felt like a small-scale homecoming fasho! When Mudiwa hit me up and asked me if I’d be willing to do a virtual book talk for the CCCC/NCTE Black Caucus, I was in! My relationship with the Black Caucus goes back over fifteen years. To put it in perspective, I went to my first CCCCs in March 2008 – I actually got accepted on a panel to present at CCCCs before I was accepted into the doctoral program at St. John’s. It’s been a conference that I’ve attended almost every year since (give or take a couple boycott years, but alas, I digress…)
While the CCCC may have its stuff with it (as all of these academic conferences do), one thing that has always remained the same is the relationships I built with folks in the Black Caucus have only deepened since my first meeting in 2008. So it always makes sense in a moment like this to pay it forward and come chop it up with home team about my work. And thanks to the wonders of technology, I was able to do it from the comfort of my home office – anytime I can talk about my research in my house shoes, I ain’t mad at nobody, for real!
Shout out to Mudiwa Pettus, Alicia Hatcher, Lerie Gabriel, Maurika Smutherman, Alexis McGee and Ersula Ore for having me speak with the Black Caucus, and for acknowledging the release of “K for the Way.” And thanks for the members of the Caucus who came through to listen and talk with me about why this book is important to the field. And as always, infinite shouts to my mellow Carlos at Classic Material NY for the illest DJ inspired sweatshirt, for real!
And as every dope Hip Hop mixtape DJ used to say, “…as we continue on…”
